ENVIRONMENT & BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
Environment is the subtotal of physical, biological, social, political condition of a territory. Environment deteriorates due to alteration of any component of the environment. Human induced activities are mainly liable to environmental degradation. Natural environmental equilibrium is declining due to environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. Environmental degradation and biodiversity loss are major threats to the environment. Land, water, and air pollution are at an alarming rate in the country. Different biodiversity species are declining day by day due to environmental degradation and unplanned exploitation of biodiversity resources.
The five principal pressures directly driving biodiversity loss – habitat change, over-exploitation, pollution, invasive alien species and climate change – are either constant or increasing in intensity. According to Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, ‘Many economies remain blind to the huge value of the diversity of animals, plants and other life forms and their role in healthy and functioning ecosystems from forests and freshwaters to soils, oceans and even the atmosphere.’
Objectives
- To measure the extent and severity of environmental degradation.
- To identify the crucial causes relating to biodiversity decreasing.
- To make recommendations (on a short term, mid-term and long term basis) to mitigate environmental degradation and enhance biodiversity.
- To assist development of technical, institutional and financial strategies to mitigate environmental degradation and enhance biodiversity.
- To ensure a sustainable environment.
Activities
- Research.
- Awareness Raising.
- Capacity Building.
- Social Afforestation and
- Solid Waste Management.
Household Garbage is a big issue and there are very few garbage collection spots in the Chittagong city areas. High rise buildings have created and increased this problem. People do not want to deposit the wastage into the dustbin far away from their home, especially the housewives. To save time and tiredness many people throw wastages from the buildings which makes the roads and passages filthy and dirty; the environment becomes anxious due to the bad smell of this wastage. This garbage creates blockage in the sewerage canals and drains.
