ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT

Adolescence is one of the major formative stages in human life before entering into adulthood and achieving the ability to mature, responsible decision making. Adolescence is the period of psychological and social transition between childhood and adulthood. In Bangladesh approximately 24% of the population are adolescents. They have grown from 21.85 million in 1991 to 27.82 million in 2001, which is an increase by 27.32%. Poverty and other problems affect boys and girls, while early and unwanted pregnancies, gender bias, malnutrition and forced prostitution affect mostly adolescent girls. In our country many teen-aged girls think that they have lower social status in the society due to their fewer scopes and opportunities than the boys. The adolescents are never considered as children and girls rather they are the women or mother of the coming days. Moreover the adolescent girls are the most victims of rape, acid burning, early marriage, cross border trafficking and many other torture and oppressions.

Almost 23% of the people of Bangladesh are adolescents. Due to unavailability of information on sexuality they often develop some wrong perceptions which are sometimes harmful as they experience different physical and psychological changes during this period. Realizing this, CCDB conducted several education sessions for adolescents to provide them information regarding sexuality and reproductive health. During the reporting year a total of 1,113 adolescent boys and girls took part in such education sessions. Before attending the sessions 50% of the participants had very little knowledge about reproductive health but after the sessions it was observed that they had acquired adequate knowledge that will be useful during the rest of their life.
