FISHERIES

Bangladesh is a country of rivers and floodplains with a high potential of aquatic resources and fish plays a very important role in the daily life of many people. About 60% of the animal protein comes from the fisheries sector. But unfortunately over the last two decades, the average per capita protein intake declined from 58 to 40 grams per day. Bangladesh produces 1,400,000 tons of fish annually mostly through inland capture fisheries and aquaculture. Every year 2.2 million people are added to the population of Bangladesh and they have to be fed. If the fallen marshlands and abandoned ponds can be utilized for fish culture, people can increase their income, reduce their poverty as well as fulfill their protein deficiency. In order to reduce poverty and improve the livelihoods of the rural poor people, BARNALY has been successfully implementing the fish culture program since 2005.

Objectives

  1. To improve the economic condition of the poor people.
  2. To utilize the abandoned marshlands for fish culture.
  3. To fulfill the protein deficiency of poor people and
  4. To create employment opportunities for the young unemployed people.

Achievements

Fish culture program is run by active community participation and successfully implemented in the Gaschhi Union of Raozan Upazilla under Chittagong District. Barnaly has two-demonstration fishponds to train and motivate the young people. In the last fiscal year, Barnaly successfully arranged integrated fish culture training. Moreover, Barnaly provides interested trainers easy loans to apply their practical knowledge in the field. Besides, local people visit the demonstration ponds and get technical information.
